Question is, is there any temporary fix I can do for like a week or so until payday when I can pay to get it fixed. Should I just keep a gallon of water on me and keep filling the radiator. Also I know nothing about auto maintenance, not even how to change oil. Please help me because I am broke until payday.Cracked radiator on my 1997 toyota t-100?There are products you can buy at auto parts store to temporarily plug holes in radiators. They're called %26quot;Stop Leak%26quot; or something like that; but I don't know how well they will work on cracks or how much they cost. I am unable to find recommendations for my '92 Corolla in the owners' manual and everywhere else I have looked. Can someone please tell me an internet resource that would tell me in general how often to do the various maintenance services?Where on the internet can I find information on when to perform regular vehicle maintenance operations? You likely do not need any of this. It is hard to find a reputable mechanic. Most of those places are about sales, not what is really needed. Some even charge for things they do not do. The idle needle valve is just a bit far open or there is a small vacuum leak that is making the idle slightly above the correct cold idle setting, about 700 rpm. That prevents the Idle Air Control valve from doing anything - it stays closed - and the extra drag of the alternator when you turn the lights on slows the engine.

My money is on a vacuum leak, and the intake manifold gasket is top of the list. What is your take on repairs, should I get a used radiator, buy the temp seal, or replace with a brand new one. MORE IMPORTANTLY could this have cracked when they did the coolant exchange and secondly if it was a preexisting crack, would they have seen some leakage at the time of doing the exchange...Thats what I really want to know...

Here is the hx from my first post

have a 95 Toyota Camry V4. The other day my car overheated. There was smoke coming from below the hood and the temp gage was at the H level. When I looked at the coolant tank it was empty. So I filled water and coolant in the radiator. About 6 days later I checked the tank again it was empty. So I filled the tank part with coolant about 3 hours later and a 15 min drive later (to some stores) I looked at the tank and it was halfway gone (i filled it to the line). I find it strange that it took 6 days to empty completely but not even 2-3 hours for it to go half way full. So I am wondering if the car is getting worse. I havent had another overheating and the temp gage has been at the middle level. I am wondering what the problem is and what you think the repairs might cost. I am a woman and I have always had a hard time with auto shops because they always seem to take advantage, and tell me that there is so many things wrong with the car. I just want to go in prepared. Thanks

Additional Details

BTW how safe is it to drive like this? I mean as long as I check the coolant tank. I cant afford repairs this minute. And should I fill that tank with coolant or water. Thanks

Oh yeah on July 10th I went to sears and purchased a package deal that inlcuded a coolant exhange, fuel system cleaning and oil change. If there was a crack, leak etc... would they have seen/determined this when they did the coolant exchange??? On my invoice it is says belts, leakage, pressure cap, hoses other all are check off and no recommedation are suggested, and that was done on July 10th is it possible for whatever to go wrong so soon after that. Again I never had a problem with overheating beforeWell well it was the Radiator after all!!?If you keep the coolant level full enough to not overheat, it wouldn't harm your engine. But with a 5%26quot; crack in your radiator it is not going to stay full even without driving your car and building heat and pressure in the cooling system. You need to replace the radiator then add coolant but until you fix the leak use only water to refill it. I run a repair shop and when I tell someone that there is something wrong with their car it is because there is something wrong with it, if your shop needs to drum up business by lying to their customers then find another one. There is more than enough repair business out there without ripping someone off.Well well it was the Radiator after all!!?If it were me I'd be talking to the manager at Sears about what they are going to cover on this repair. If they did a coolant exchange and reported no problem, it's not likely a 5 inch crack would suddenly and mysteriously appear shortly afterward.

I would expect them to repair what they caused by replacing the radiator.

Don't get mad or mean about it, but do tell them what you expect from them.Lavellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314252165805435386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1357411925874130294.post-34877858180527493912011-10-24T21:36:00.000-07:002011-10-24T21:36:01.201-07:00How do I turn down the heat on my forced hot water home radiators? The radiator has a knob that says %26quot;off%26quot; turn counter clockwise, I turn it all the way and the heat doesn't seem to go down, I would think that less water would go through the radiator. Any know how th eknob works...do I turn it half way to stop the water from passing through? I know this sounds silly but the knob moves up and down but the heat doesn't seem to change. How do I turn down the heat on my forced hot water home radiators? Most likely, the flow would not change, this switch should regulate the temperature. I would check the gas valve, it may be stuck. Also, if you have an ohmeter, you should see a change in resistance as you turn the temp. control. How do I turn down the heat on my forced hot water home radiators? The individual radiator flow control valves are better left open except for instances where only a few rooms woud be empty, or to lower the water flow volume say in a hot upstairs bedroom. You don't want to restrict them all.

If the whole house is a bit too warm, then the boiler settings should be lowered to the range permitted in your owners manual. If you don't have this, better get a qualified tech as this is a boiler. How do I turn down the heat on my forced hot water home radiators?if these are cast iron radiators they will take a while to cool down. the knob controls a restrictor inside the valve, it doesn't shut the water completely off. this is done because, back in the days when houses weren't insulated, the radiator could freeze. the plate inside has a hole in it to maintain water movement at all times so this won't happen. with cast iron rads you are better off turning down the thermostat to control the heat. good luck.Lavellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314252165805435386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1357411925874130294.post-10945903079587540792011-10-24T21:35:00.008-07:002011-10-24T21:35:55.549-07:00How to Bypass 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Heater Core? The heater core is leaking on the passenger side of the cabin. You can't block the flow - it has to always be circulating. Just cut the 2 hoses entering and exiting the firewall with a utility knife and connect them together with a coupler and clamps.

Before you bypass the heater, check that the problem isn't with one of those connections at the firewall. I had leaking antifreeze coming into the passenger side and the shop told me the core was bad and wanted 700-800 to replace it. I decided to do it myself. Bought a core for 79.00. However, there is no central thermostat control, thus to make a change means having to go around and alter each radiator individually. I am told that it would now be difficult to wire one from present boiler position to the hallway, and that a remote version would be a better option. Does anyone know anything about these, how effective they are etc? Can anyone recommend one? Thank you in advance.Central Heating Room Thermostat?A simple job to install a wireless thermostat, but MUCH better to use a wireless programmable thermostat, with optimising. A 07. You have to watch out. I worked for a shop once. They look for every hing in the book to change and make money. Yes you got took. They saw an opportunity to make some money and they did. Yes it says to do all that. But in a matter of opinion,Wouldn't have done all that. They can give you a scare tactic and it works. They tell you what if stories. Unless you tow trailers allot and do heavy hauling I would not worry to much about doing all the Factory recommended services. That is where they get ya as you've seen.Chevy Suburban - how much should a 60,000 mile service cost?Personally that was highway robbery, it's sad that still this day and age shops see a women coming and take advantage .You know in my option that work shouldn't of cost more then 250 to 350 tops. Many service centres have min hidden set chargers , that say no car comes in for a service check like that without it being a 600.00 dollar bill at least.I know this from friends that worked for big auto service centres that demanded he find things wrong with cars or make stuff up just so the cost was at least 600. Plus they threatened to fire him just bec he didn't wish to rip people off, so he and my other friends quit.Chevy Suburban - how much should a 60,000 mile service cost?If you really want to know what specific services are recommended open your service manual in your glove compartment. Something stinks in river city as the coolant is supposed to be good for 150,000 miles. Exactly what $228.00 part did they replace? I'd certainly question that. As for the transmission and filter change look in your recommended services @ 60,000 miles. If the bill was going to be that high they should have explained everything to make you aware of what was coming.

I do know A Chevrolet dealer just tried to rip my daughter who has an 04 Tahoe. They told her that both differentials (four wheel drive) should be drained, flushed and fresh synthetic gear oil installed. I'm at 40,000 now.?I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla LE. How many miles can I drive before I need to do a Radiator Flush and replace the coolant? I've heard it can be up to 90,000 to 100,000 miles. Is that true? I've driven 40,000 now. I know that my car needs a Transmission Fluid change too, but that's common for every 15,000 or 30,000 miles. I'm taking it in tomorrow for a Transmission fluid change...Do they %26quot;flush%26quot; out the transmission fluid too and just refill it again with new?How many miles for Radiator Flush? I'm at 40,000 now.?I'll address the transmission first. 40,000 miles is a little low for a transmission flush. 75 to 80,000 miles is more like it. The only thing your going to lose by flushing the transmission now is a little money but if you feel like it do it. Make sure the transmission pan is removed and the filter changed at the same time and the transmission refilled with the manufacturers recommended grade of transmission fluid.

Now on to the radiator. Check the color of the coolant. If it's green, it's in good shape. If you see some discoloration in it by all means have the cooling system flushed and refilled with new coolant. I check the coolant overflow tank on my vehicles for discoloration and use it for a guide as when to flush my system. Again the 75 to 80,000 mile range is about where I start to see some discoloration of the coolant.

Hope this helps. How many miles for Radiator Flush? I'm at 40,000 now.?Do it now. No car has ever been hurt by too many flushes, but lots have been ruined by inattention. How many miles for Radiator Flush? I'm at 40,000 now.?If you have the owners manual, look there in the service recomadations. Most vehicals now have 5year 15000 mile antifreeze. They sell a cleaner that you add to your coolant that will work most of the buildup loose. They do not just clean the heater core. It will clean the entire motor water circuit. But you must follow the instructions. I have one in every vehicle I own and use them every year. There are two heater hoses from the water pump. You may need a repair manual to figure out which one you need. It won't work as well if you put it in the wron hose. Most of them are between 1/2 and 3/4 in dia. He couldn't get any coolant from the radiator cap OR the overflow tank and in the bottom was brown muck that looked remarkably like mud. as for my transmission fluid, IT WAS BLACK! what can i do and how? (provide details)I just found out my car has problems with the radiator and transmission fluid. can u help me?If you are going to Jiffy Lube I assume you typically don't work on your own vehicle(s). Either way, regarding the engine cooling system obviously as you see it needs to be flushed. I really wouldn't recommend doing this job yourself. Not because it is difficult but because it is messy and best done with a power flush machine to be thorough. So if you agree, given the severity of the condition I would have a mechanic power flush the cooling system and check it for leaks. Power flushing can present leaks that would otherwise be stopped with that mud and scale in your radiator now. Make sure they wash out the overflow bottle also. I have seen customers come back to the shop because debris that was missed discolored the coolant. Letting someone do this service for you keeps you clean and gets you back on the road with a service warranty too. Extended life coolant (colored other than green) can last 100k miles if it isn't contaminated. After this service I would plan to check and possibly change your coolant every 24 to 30k miles. Otherwise you may be looking at accelerated breakdown of system components like water pump bearings, hoses and other plumbing, heater core, etc...Particularly considering the current condition.

Assuming when you say “fluid” the transmission or transaxle is an automatic. Regarding the %26quot;black%26quot; transmission fluid or oil, black particulate is clutch friction material (paper) as opposed to shiny particulate (metals). Both are normal within limits but may, or may not be indicative of a problem. Unless you are feeling slip, experiencing shuddering, or hearing clunking noises from the powertrain or specifically the transmission I would just service the transmission if you haven’t already. A full service mechanic as opposed to a Jiffy Lube technician is more likely to be able to tell you the condition of the transmission based on the debris in the bottom of the pan. It would depend on the experience of the Jiffy Lube technician though. They provide services not a diagnosis or repair solution. The fluid and filter (if serviceable) should be replaced roughly every 12k miles. Check your owner’s manual though.I just found out my car has problems with the radiator and transmission fluid. can u help me?sounds like your mixing the anti-freeze with the transmission fluid.you need to change the radiator and change the transmission fluid and filter.Lavellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06314252165805435386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1357411925874130294.post-6240743907731858592011-10-24T21:34:00.004-07:002011-10-24T21:34:30.686-07:00Honda accord 1994 accidented Ex-R?i am willing to buy a honda accord i have seen one and its accidented from front at a low speed so the bumber is broken headlights needs to be adjusted and radiator needs to be change.the car have 180 thuousand kms on it.the condition otherwise is not perfect az well.it takes oil too i know thats coz its my friendz car.its and automatic.. so what do you guyz think how much should i pay for it and how much it can cost me to fix bumper radiator and headlights..and also would be gratefull if somebody can advise how to stop car from taking oil there must be some way ..

thanx a lot for your honest opinions..Honda accord 1994 accidented Ex-R?i would get different car ,or used parts will run 200 to 300 dollars plus labor of 150 to 300 ,thats a lot of miles on car as far as oil consumption have to rebuild or replace engine,i have used fully synthetic oil in acar i owned that smoked and it stopped smoking because synthetic will not burn good luck hope this helpsHonda accord 1994 accidented Ex-R?a 13 yr old car...pass it by...if it eats oil and has been in an accident, you're asking for more trouble than the car is worth (and it's not worth much...) I don't recommend doing that just to drain your engine, I did, but I was rebuilding engine and it was all taken apart. You must drill a hole in plug, screw a screw in it and pull the old one out, and then pound the new one in, but you can't pound it too hard or it will fall into the engine( by the way, that happened), and you have to pound it enough to get it to seal, and not stick out. The only reason I changed it is because it was damaged and leaking from taking old turbo off. Do you have a haynes manual that covers the 4g63 engine?
