No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?

Just had a corgi engineer look at our combi boiler, cause we werent getting hot water or radiator wasnt heating up. I have no idea what he did to fix the problem, i wasnt at the house(my tenants were in), he was at the house for 45mins and fixed the problem and charged 180!!! I think ive been skanked but i dont know exactly what his done to challenge this. Anyhow he advised to change the radiator water, as it was dirty...who do i speak to carry out this service, and how much does it cost? And if i pay for annual boiler service, would this cover cleaning radiator water? No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?the invoice will tell you exactly what he did for the 180 pounds

for that price he must have changed a part but it could have just been something simple meaning he has ripped you off.

ignore riga mortice - balancing the system would have meant you had poor heating not complete failure of HW and CH!!! lol

a powerflush is a full days job if done properly but it may not need doing if its a combi boiler. if its a very old system and used to support a cast iron heat exchanger in the old boiler and the rads are older than the boiler then it may need doing but usualy with a combi you can get away with fitting a magnaclean (magnetic filter) to catch any loose iron particles which try to circulate back through the boiler. These small particles get caught in the restricted waterways within the combi and block everything up. if i ever come accross this type of thing i always fill a small dish up for you too see for your self -

but im not a money grabbing ****, i get paid salary so i dont benefit for lying to customers!

you can always get a 1 off service from british gas and ask them to check a water sample while they are there - if you make sure you are there on the visit then you can see for your self for piece of mind!No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?He should have flushed the system while he was there. No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?what he probably did was drained out the entire system, then added this stuff to one of them (forgot what it's called, but you can get it at homebase lol, some kind of flushing agent) and then filled the system back up.

a little expensive, but it's about rite for what was done.

i dont think you will need to do it again for about 2-5 years. No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?Report him to trading standards he hasn't flushed your system he has conned you and ripped you off by 180 for 5 minutes work balancing your systemNo hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?To clean the dirty water from the radiators they have to be individually flushed with a power washer (bit like a jet washer).

That is to close off the flow of water to the radiator by the valve, then disconnect the pipeline %26amp; connect the pressure washer %26amp; hence flush out with clean water.

Depending on how many radiators you have in the house it would take quite a while to do this properly,

I know because Ive done my own, I actually took out the radiators one by one %26amp; did it in the back garden !

I was getting hot water with dirty water, basically if the boilers PILOT light was lit %26amp; hot water was demanded there should be hot water.

Another reason for the radiators being cold is there could have been trapped air in the radiator, which is really easy to solve - bleed them with the key you get - a 2 min job !

Or alternatively was the temp / thermostat control set properly on each radiator %26amp; room sensor ?

The cost to clean all your radiators will be about 300 + as it is a relatively big job.

Do it yourself as its very easy !No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?If this is a steam system, you should be flushing the low water cutoff/auto fill valve weekly. Around here (stateside) these are MacDonnell-Miller valves. They are usually on the side of the boiler and have a sight glass to show water level with a spring loaded water valve on the bottom.

Put a 5 gallon bucket under the valve and flush until clean water flows.

This is considered periodic home owner maintenance, and if I was on the service call, I would have done a more extensive job, (as a rule) but sometimes the work load doesn't allow one the time for perfection...

If this is a hydronic system, my apologies...

TomNo hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?you can hire a flushing unit from HSS to do the job follow the manual ideally each rad needs to be flushed individually. If you are competent with basic plumbing its not difficult to powerflush the unit

as for the 180 there is probably a call out fee of 60/70 + the time he spent and material.

its about 4/5 hour job if done properly so 67+Vat + chemicals + inhibitors i would say 120/150 for machine and chemicals this depends on the size of the system

But only attempt this if you feel competent to do it if its not done properly you may end up with sludge being filled in the boiler itselfNo hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?Ask for a fully detailed invoice. If no hot water or heating is just to turn in line taps on to bring pressure up to one bar. Cost 50.00 call out fee plus VAT.No hot water or radiator heat-engineer advised radiator water is dirty, how much does it cost to clean this?British gas charge around 600 quid to do a power flush which should take between 6 and 8 hours depending on the size of system, you can usually get someone cheaper out the paper but theres no guarantee after they are finished compared to the lifetime guarantee you get with the gas board.taking the rads off and flushing with a hose is another wat but it doesn't clean the pipework or the boiler. why would you pay 180 and not even know what was done anyway
